A bit more about me
I sometimes refer to my art licensing expertise as a ducked taped education and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I started my career from ground zero, no portfolio, no connections, no clear understanding of the industry or just how massive it was. I learned while doing and by asking the right questions of the right people as they came across my path. It took a giant leap of faith, a bit of tenacity, and a whole lot of advice but I was able to transition from my non art job to a full time artist within my first few years. I’ll never forget the day that I out earned myself but by doing something I loved and I’m thankful everyday for taking those first scary steps.
I’ve worked on my own as well as with an agent and understand the pros and cons of each. I’ve had my art in big box retailers as well as beautifully curated independent shops, again, pros and cons of each. I have negotiated outright sale deals as well as royalty agreements, you guessed it, pros and cons for each. One of the most common phrases you will hear as you research will be “it depends” and it truly does since every situation will have it’s own set of factors which can be frustrating when you are looking for general answers online. For more than a decade I have navigated irregular income planning, market trends, trade shows, and contracts. I have worn ALL the hats and struggled with which to hand off. I’ve created my own products, sold direct to consumer, taken on commissions and freelanced but nothing fit me or my art the way licensing has and it has been a joy helping other creatives find where that can fit for them.
I believe that art licensing tends to attract the type of creative who, at their core, knows their art is able to be monetized. Over the years I have had the honor to meet so many amazing creatives and although art licensing was my perfect industry fit, for others, it was just a stop along their journey. It’s helpful to understand what part of your business you’d like licensing to play; licensing your art and working with manufacturers may not be the best answer in the end but there are additional possibilities that utilize many of the same skills. I adore my creative community and learning all the ways there are to create an income and life around our creative passion. No matter what stage we find ourselves, I believe we all have something to teach as well as room to learn and it has been my privilege to help others as they navigate this particular leg of that process.
